Joint letter to COREPER I on RED and Council Regulation on Acceleration of Deployment of Renewable Energy
Posted on Monday 12 December 2022
The Renewable Energy Directive lacks appropriate understanding on biowaste management, leading to a legal barrier for the deployment of anaerobic digestion plants. This is of paramount importance for municipalities, who will hold the responsibility to separately collect biowaste as of 1 January 2024. Further to that, the Commission's proposal for a Council Regulation on the acceleration of deployement of renewable energy, published on 9 November, focuses on solar energy, wind energy and heat pumps. However, it omits biogas and biomethane and thus, anaerobic digestion for the treatment of biowaste. On 9 December MWE and FEAD co-signed a letter addressing the issue to the Council here.
