It was created in 1996 as a partnership of all Flemish inter-municipal waste companies and the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities (VVSG). Interafval makes sure that the voice of local authorities sound louder and more united, so that they can better leave their mark on the Flemish waste policy. Local governments receive a basis how to deal with the daily waste problems. Interafval has a tradition of thematic working groups, where the staff of the various intermunicipal waste companies exchanges views on many specialised waste topics.
