MWE welcomes the European Commission's proposals on textiles set out in the Circular Economy Action Plan 2.0, launched in March 2020. Aware of the mandatory target to set up separate collection of textiles by 1 January 2025, MWE raises a set of critical points to be into high consideration in view of the upcoming EU Strategy for Textiles, Sustainable Products Policy Framework and any further EU strategies and legislation related to textiles and textile waste. Municipal Waste Europe welcomes the Roadmap for a new Soil Thematic Strategy but calls on the European Commission to strengthen a set of crucial points. MWE's response highlights the relevant role of biowaste management in contributing to healthier soils and circular economy.

In view of the start of the inter-institutional negotiations among the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission, Municipal Waste Europe issues a position paper to bring clarity to the conditionality that applies to utilising the regional and cohesion funds in the version of the text following first reading in Parliament with regard to waste management.

As representatives of waste management we are pleased to co-sign the Circular Plastics Alliance Declaration as we agree with its intentions however we find that its ambitions are not high enough. MWE issue an accompanying statement highlighting what we expect the Alliance to work on, above and beyond the pledges in the declaration.

MWE joins forces together with other associations to support an integrated waste management approach with an appropriate and sustainable interaction of source separation, reuse and recycling, energy recovery and environmentally sound disposal of waste that cannot be recovered. Cohesion funds are important instruments to help Member States that still have low recycling rates and depend heavily on landfills, to create a sustainable waste management system.

MWE joins forces together with other associations to support that a sustainable investment should respect the waste hierarchy and follow the integrated waste management approach with an appropriate and sustainable interaction of quality recycling, efficient energy recovery and environmentally sound disposal of waste that cannot be recovered.

MWE becomes part of a broad coalition which urges the Council to support the binding target of at least 35% recycled plastic in beverage bottles by 2025. This target voted by the European Parliament on 24 October is instrumental in the achievement of the objectives of the Single Use Plastics (SUP) Directive and in igniting the much supported transition towards a more circular economy.
